However, younger and more active patients generally have better return-to-sport outcomes with surgical repair. Dr. Gillman will discuss both options and help you make the best decision for your lifestyle.
Bunion surgery is performed under regional anesthesia (nerve block), and most patients report manageable discomfort in the first 1–2 weeks. By 6 weeks most patients are in a walking boot, and by 3 months most are in regular shoes. Minimally invasive techniques result in less soft tissue trauma and faster recovery.
Both are excellent options for end-stage ankle arthritis. Ankle replacement preserves motion and is preferred in patients with good bone stock and alignment who want to maintain an active lifestyle. Fusion provides a more durable, pain-free result but eliminates ankle motion. Dr. Gillman will review your imaging and activity goals to recommend the best approach.
