Not every ache requires a doctor visit โ but certain symptoms indicate a structural injury that won't heal properly without professional treatment. Here are the injuries we see most often and the warning signs to watch for.
Key signs: A "pop" at the time of injury. Rapid knee swelling within hours. Knee feels unstable or "gives way" when turning or pivoting. Difficulty bearing weight. Most common during cutting, pivoting, or landing from a jump.
Key signs: Pain on the outside of the shoulder, especially when reaching overhead or behind your back. Weakness when lifting or rotating the arm. Pain that worsens at night. Crackling sensation with shoulder movement. Can result from acute injury or gradual wear.
Key signs: Knee pain along the joint line. Swelling that develops over 24-48 hours. Knee locking or catching during movement. Difficulty fully straightening the knee. Pain with twisting or squatting motions.
Key signs: Deep shoulder pain with overhead activity. Catching, clicking, or popping in the shoulder. Shoulder feels unstable or like it might "slip out." Pain when throwing. Decreased throwing velocity or accuracy for athletes.
Key signs: Significant swelling and bruising. Unable to bear weight. Pain and tenderness on both sides of the ankle. Instability or feeling of the ankle "rolling." Severe sprains can involve complete ligament tears requiring structured rehabilitation or surgery.
Key signs: Pain that develops gradually during activity and improves with rest. Localized tenderness and swelling at the fracture site. Pain that worsens over days or weeks with continued activity. Common in the foot, shin, and hip. Often missed on initial X-rays.
The "walk it off" mentality can turn a treatable injury into a chronic problem. Seek orthopedic evaluation if you experience:
A pop, snap, or tearing sensation at the time of injury
Rapid swelling within the first few hours after injury
Joint instability โ feeling like the joint gives way or is loose
Inability to bear weight or use the affected limb normally
Pain that persists beyond 1-2 weeks despite RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation)
Visible deformity โ joint looks abnormal, bone appears displaced
When you come to Restore with a sports injury, here is what to expect:
Physical examination โ specialized orthopedic tests to assess joint stability, range of motion, and identify the likely injury.
On-site imaging โ X-ray for fractures and alignment, MRI for soft tissue injuries (ligaments, tendons, cartilage). Done in-house, same visit.
Diagnosis and options โ honest assessment of what is injured, how severe it is, and all available treatment paths: conservative, injection-based, or surgical.
Treatment plan โ customized to your injury, your sport, your competition level, and your personal goals. We never recommend surgery unless it is clearly the best option for your situation.
