Stiffness, grinding, swelling, loss of range โ understand the signs of joint degeneration and when conservative treatment is no longer enough.
Joint pain affects millions of Americans and is one of the leading causes of disability. Whether from years of wear and tear, an old injury, or an inflammatory condition, damaged joints progressively lose their ability to move smoothly and painlessly. At Restore, we treat the full spectrum of joint conditions from early arthritis to end-stage joint failure.
The most common form of arthritis. Cartilage gradually wears away until bone grinds on bone. Symptoms include pain with activity, morning stiffness lasting less than 30 minutes, swelling, grinding or crunching, and progressive loss of range of motion. Most common in patients over 50.
Pain in the groin, thigh, or buttock that worsens with walking and stair climbing. Stiffness when getting out of a chair or car. Difficulty putting on shoes and socks. Limping. Gradual loss of hip rotation. Can significantly limit mobility and independence.
Deep aching pain in the shoulder that worsens with activity. Grinding or crunching with movement. Loss of range of motion โ difficulty reaching overhead, behind the back, or across the body. Night pain that disrupts sleep. Can be combined with rotator cuff damage.
Joint pain and swelling in multiple joints, often symmetrical. Morning stiffness lasting more than one hour. Fatigue and systemic symptoms. Can affect any joint. Requires coordinated care between rheumatology and orthopedics when joint damage becomes severe.
Arthritis that develops in a joint years after an injury โ even one that healed well at the time. Previous fractures, dislocations, or ligament injuries accelerate cartilage breakdown. Common in the knee, ankle, and wrist. Symptoms mirror osteoarthritis but in younger patients.
Localized joint pain, catching, locking, or swelling. Cartilage damage can result from injury or gradual degeneration. Early detection and treatment โ including cartilage restoration procedures โ can delay or prevent the need for joint replacement.
Not everyone with joint pain needs a replacement. But when these signs appear, it may be time for a serious conversation with a joint specialist:
Pain that limits daily activities you once did easily โ walking, stairs, gardening, playing with grandchildren
Pain that wakes you at night or prevents restful sleep despite medication
Diminishing relief from injections, therapy, and medications that used to work
Joint deformity or stiffness that is visibly worsening over time
X-rays showing bone-on-bone โ complete loss of cartilage in the joint
We always start conservative and escalate only when necessary:
Activity modification & weight management โ reducing joint stress through lifestyle changes can significantly improve symptoms in early arthritis.
Physical therapy โ strengthening the muscles around the joint improves stability, reduces pain, and delays progression.
Injections โ corticosteroid injections for inflammation, viscosupplementation (gel shots) for lubrication, and PRP for regenerative healing.
Arthroscopic surgery โ for cartilage damage, loose bodies, or mechanical symptoms that aren't responding to conservative care.
Joint replacement โ when the joint is truly worn out, modern robotic-assisted replacement restores pain-free movement with rapid recovery protocols.
