Modern hip replacement has come a long way. With the anterior approach used at Restore Orthopedics, most patients walk within hours of surgery and go home within 24 hours. Here's what recovery typically looks like.
Day of surgery
The anterior approach is a muscle-sparing technique — your surgeon works between muscles rather than cutting through them. This means less tissue damage, less pain, and faster recovery. Most patients stand and take their first steps within 2-4 hours after surgery.
Week 1-2: Early recovery
You'll use a walker or cane for stability. Pain is managed with medication and is typically well-controlled. Most patients report that the surgical pain is already less than the arthritis pain they had before surgery. Ice, elevation, and gentle range-of-motion exercises begin immediately.
Week 3-4: Building strength
Most patients transition from a walker to a cane, and many are walking unassisted by week 3-4. Physical therapy focuses on strengthening the hip muscles, improving balance, and restoring normal gait patterns. Many patients can drive by week 3 (automatic transmission, non-narcotic pain management).
Week 6-8: Returning to daily life
By 6 weeks, most activity restrictions are lifted. You can return to work (desk jobs often sooner), resume driving, and begin light recreational activities. Physical therapy continues to build endurance and strength.
Month 3-6: Full activity
Most patients return to golf, swimming, cycling, hiking, and travel within 3-6 months. The implant is designed to last 20-30+ years with normal use. High-impact activities like running and jumping are generally discouraged to protect the implant.
Is it time?
If you're living with bone-on-bone hip pain, struggling to walk, or your quality of life has declined despite injections and therapy — it may be time to consider replacement. Dr. Michael Gillman and Dr. Navid Ghalambor perform robotic-assisted hip replacement at Restore Orthopedics for optimal precision and outcomes.
